This problem was brought to my attention first by a top marketer, who is also a good friend of mine. He complained about having enough time to get the things done that are required to run an internet business. I understood how he felt, because I was having the same problem. After thinking about it and doing some reading on the internet I discovered the key to getting more time is spending your time on things that really matter, meaning things that make a difference for the success of your business and personal life.

What Is A Link?

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

When you first start doing article marketing, you may have some vague idea that you’re doing it to bring visitors to your website, but you’re just not sure how that technically happens.

That is perfectly fine–it is not necessary that you understand the technical in’s and out’s of how article marketing works in order to make it work for you.

You can submit articles and still see excellent results without having the first idea about what a link is, but at some point your curiosity might make you wonder, “What is this talk about links? What are they?”

I get that question sometimes, so I’ll explain as simply as I can what a link is and how it works.

A link is like a bridge from one web page to another. Just like a bridge connects two pieces of land to each other so that people can easily travel to and from each location, so a link connects two web pages to make it easy for people get from one page to the other.

Terms you will commonly hear are:

*Backlink– a link going to your website.

*One-way link– a link going from site A to site B, but not from site B to site A. This is the most powerful type of link.

*Reciprocal link– a link going from site A to site B, and also from site B to site A.

From a search engine point of view, how “connected” (linked) your website is to other web pages of similar topics gives a strong indication of how popular or respected your site is. A link to your site is like a “vote” for it–search engines look at the “votes” that your site receives when determining where your site will rank in search engine results.

The higher your website appears in the results listings, the more traffic you will receive.

So, the end goal is to receive more traffic to your site.

The strategy is to elevate your search engine ranking for you keyword terms (common words or phrases people in your target market use when looking up information on your topic).

The means by which you elevate your search engine ranking is by building links to your website.

How Do You Build Links?

This is where article marketing comes in. You write articles on the topic of your website, and then you submit the article along with a resource box. The resource box is where you can tell a little about yourself and give a link to your website.

Every time you submit one of your articles to an article directory, you build a link (via the link in your resource box).

But that isn’t all–article directories provide content for website owners. Articles used in article marketing are also called “free reprint articles”, and when an article is published on an article directory, ideally website owners will find the article and then also republish the article on their own site. Each time your article is republished, you gain a powerful one-way backlink to your site.

Imagine how quickly the backlinks can build–if you submit one article to one article directory, you are actually getting more than one backlink (assuming other people decide to republish your article). One article can be a continuing source of backlinks.

With article marketing the idea is to submit articles every month for the lifetime of your website. Imagine submitting 8 articles every month, with each one of those articles building numerous backlinks and continuing to produce backlinks every time they are republished. If you are committed to marketing your website by submitting articles, you can make a dramatic impact on the traffic to your site over the long term.

It’s not enough just to have a website. You need to market that website to get traffic to it. Links are essential when building traffic to your site and can be easily built with article marketing. Just write articles on your topic and submit them steadily each month (8 articles per site will do). Keep at it, and you will create a link building machine that will cause your site to continuously grow and receive more traffic.

Are You Building a List for Your Business? Why You Should Be.

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

I was recently surprised when someone who was new to affiliate marketing asked me. . .”Why do you need a list anyway?”

That’s a good question. And many newcomers are probably asking themselves the same thing. When we first start out, we aren’t really thinking in terms of long-term profit and we don’t really have the statistics ingrained in our brains. We’re just trying to figure out how to make money .. .so the list-building concept may not be all that intuitive.

This article is the first in a series of list building tips. Here I’m going to focus on why everyone (yes, everyone) in business benefits from growing a list.

But first, what is a list anyway? It’s basically just a series of people who have (hopefully) given you their contact information. These contacts are considered leads and the quality of these leads can vary greatly. A group of people who have purposefully asked you to sent them details or information about a product or service that you offer is considered very high quality. If you have a list of contacts who are interested in your industry in general but haven’t shown any interest in your particular product or business, that too is a fairly targeted list.

You may have a list of people that you have obtained from buying leads or something similar. These are most likely low-quality leads.

Keep in mind that you will most likely have many lists, each representing a different characteristic. It’s important to market to each list appropriately and this will be discussed in a later article.

So, on to the real list building tips article number 1: five reasons you want to start building your list now if you haven’t done so already.

1. Increase your earnings, even from the people who don’t buy your product. Anyone who has already learned the lesson will gladly tell you. . .not having a list means not earning up to your potential. Look at it this way. You spend a month advertising something and you end up with a certain amount of sales. You won’t be able to continue selling to a buyer unless you have their contact details. If you do have the contact details, you can offer these people more similar products, or upgraded products of the ones they have purchased.

Or. . .look at it this way. An individual shows interest in what you have to offer but they don’t buy it immediately. If you can get them on your list, you can send them reminders about this product or others they may be interested. If not. . .oh well, off they go to your competitors.

Those who buy are the most likely to buy again. If you’ve sold a product to someone, you can be assured that this person is much more likely to buy that same product again or the next product you offer than someone who hasn’t bought from you. That’s another reason for building your list.

2. You don’t need your own product or business yet. . .and you can make money while building. Many people get started with marketing online and they don’t really have a clear idea about what they want to do. Or maybe they are trying lots of different things. As far as list-building goes, that’s perfectly fine! You can start out promoting someone else’s product as an affiliate and build your list that way. As you start to learn more about online marketing and get a clearer picture of where you want to go, you are actually building up one of your biggest assets that will serve you in the future.

3. You can do market research for free. Building a list means having access to feedback and ideas. This goes hand in hand with number 2. Once you can maintain contact with people, you’re able to ask them what they are looking for and in turn, you can develop your marketing strategies accordingly.

4. Building your own list means building your brand/image. The Internet is an amazing power. But you can get lost in a sea of cold websites and hypey sales pages. Building a list puts you on a more personal level with your customer and allows you to establish a rapport. In your opinion, who will customers be more willing to buy from. . .the person they’ve never seen before of the guy/gal who sends them those really cool emails about something they are interested in. . .?

5. Your own lists represent multiple sources of income. The ideas you get from your list and from what actually compelled them to join your list allows you to create your own products/services or seek out others that you can offer them.

List building can be creative - the more you put yourself and your personality into the mix, the more successful you’ll be with it.

Keep in mind that your goal is not just to obtain a bunch of email addresses or phone numbers. Effective list-building offers value and establishes/maintains relationships with those who are on your list.

If you’re wondering how it is that you actually get people on your list(s), stay tuned for the next article.
